Arteco VEMS software helps safeguard one of the nation’s naval treasures

Affectionately known as the “Battleship of Presidents” for having played host to more U.S. presidents than any other battleship, the USS Iowa is one of the most storied vessels in the history of the Navy.

The job of securing the Battleship USS Iowa museum is the responsibility of Security Manager Michael Dahl, a former law enforcement officer who was asked to take over the full-time security operations for the museum following his stint as a volunteer aboard the ship.

After speaking with CV Reps, a local manufacturer’s representation firm, Dahl and the museum’s leadership team decided to install a system with the Arteco Next video event management software (VEMS) and a network of Arecont Vision cameras.

Arteco and Axis safeguards a UNESCO world heritage site

Faenza’s International Ceramics Museum was founded in 1908 at the conclusion of the great International Exposition dedicated to Evangelista Torricelli, who carried the products of many Italian and European manufacturers. In 2000, UNESCO recognized it as “a monument professing a culture of peace” as the “expression of ceramic art throughout the world.” In order to protect its rich one-ofa-kind collections, the museum needed a video surveillance system equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

In order to design and build the video surveillance system, MIC contacted Lucchi engineering studio and R.C.M., a corporation that created an IP infrastructure that was easy to install and scalable, equipped with 85 cameras with standard and HDTV resolution and a new video encoder managed with image analysis software developed by Axis’ Application Development Partner ARTECO. Surveillance and control are therefore performed through a dedicated supervision system capable of focusing on specific control stations through “intelligent” video surveillance to follow events taking place in specific areas as defined by users.

R.C.M. was able to completely integrate the 13 preexisting analog cameras with 85 new generation Axis network cameras. The museum’s entire 9,000 m2 area is effectively monitored while containing costs, ensuring safety and preventing acts of vandalism and theft of the valuable ceramics collection and works that make Faenza’s MIC unique in the world.

Arteco and Axis upgrades security at Airport Fontanarossa

The main airport in Sicily and the first in Southern Italy with high domestic traffic and several connections to mid-range European and extra-European destinations had an outdated video surveillance system that could no longer ensure ideal control of apron surveillance. The low-definition analog system it used did not offer sufficient image quality and left some of the airport’s areas uncovered.

To salvage the former investment, management decided to resort to employing Axis video encoders to transfer the infrastructure to IP and integrate Axis HDTV digital cameras in strategic points that could cover all the airport’s aprons. To provide enhanced efficiency and share information with other public safety institutions, the infrastructure of the network designed for the apron was separated from the local network.

With a low-budget investment compared to the cost of installing a new system from scratch, a larger area can be monitored and video quality is considerably improved. The greater reliability of the system has led to the substantial reduction of false alarms. Video information is shared with public safety institutions.

High security at high elevations

The public transport link between the center of Bolzano and the plateau of Renon, in the hamlet of Soprabolzano, Italy, has a long tradition: for more than 100 years, families, commuters, students and tourists have been using this service. After 40 years of honorable service, STA (Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige S.p.A.) decided to replace the old cable car with a new type of cableway which is faster, more spacious and technologically-advanced.

The bid competition announced not only the construction of a cable car with superior quality and technology than its predecessor, but also the implementation of a wireless video surveillance system active both along the route and inside the cars, since the security and efficiency of the cable car had become a fundamental requirement both for tourists and to encourage citizens to use public transport instead of their own cars.

The bid was won by Leitner Technologies, a Vipitenobased company specializing in the design and construction of cable car systems worldwide. Leitner, together with its technology partner PlanTec, a Bolzano company specializing in the design and implementation of hightechnology systems, presented the winning project which encompassed the installation of Axis network cameras.

The new Renon cableway has a transport capacity of 550 people per hour in 8 cars which can carry up to 35 people each. The 26 installed Axis cameras based on a wireless system make this the world’s first cable car protected by real-time views of the cars.

Historic city becomes safer with Arteco and Axis

The town of Cava de’ Tirreni, in the province of Salerno, located close to the Amalfi Coast of Italy represents its northern gate. It is famous for its artistic and cultural heritage dating back to the Roman era. Cava de’ Tirreni is committed to guaranteeing its own inhabitants and many tourists not only efficient services but also safety. It was for this reason that the town needed to adapt and develop its video surveillance system in order for it to allow the local police to better monitor urban roads, public and historic buildings, while still respecting the citizens’ privacy. An area monitoring solution would also serve as a deterrent against illegal activities.

SEDAB Impianti S.r.l., a family firm founded and still located in the area of Cava de’ Tirreni, acts as technological partner of the town’s Public Administration, and has created an IP video surveillance system based on Axis network cameras and encoders which includes 6 video encoders and 12 cameras spread across the areas at risk.

The town of Cava de’ Tirreni is fully satisfied with the positive results offered by the system installed. The solution fully satisfied the requirements of the client, as evidenced by their intention to expand the area under surveillance in the future.

Traffic under control in Forlì

The municipality of Forlì, chief town of the Forlì-Cesena province, wanted to enrich the existing video surveillance installation with a system that could allow an effective monitoring of the vehicular traffic going in and out of the town area. Specifically, they were interested in gathering information about the traffic flow (number and type of vehicles), and getting statistics data that could help the administrators to choose the best traffic management policies.

Altran Italia, the Italian subsidiary of the Altran Group, offers advisor services to global organizations on technology and process innovation, development and management of IT systems as well as strategies and management. In the town of Forlì, about 70 Axis network cameras and video encoders have been installed and integrated with the existing analog cameras. The system was subsequently extended, and it now includes a total of about 120 cameras for traffic monitoring and management, providing an urban surveillance facility for public security.

The town administration of Forlì is fully satisfied with the installed system. One of the highlights is its scalability. Moreover, thanks to the ability to continue using the existing cameras, the council could get the most out of the investments made by the previous administrators and monitor wider areas of the town environment. The system is still being enlarged.
